Azure Advisor is Microsoft's built-in recommendation engine. It's free, it's always on, and it catches some obvious optimizations. So why would you need anything else?
Because Advisor covers maybe 30% of the optimization opportunities in a typical Azure subscription. Here's what it misses and what CostBeacon adds.
What Azure Advisor does well
Let's give credit where it's due. Advisor is good at:
- Flagging underutilized VMs (basic CPU threshold)
- Suggesting Reserved Instance purchases for stable VMs
- Identifying some security issues (public storage, missing backups)
- Basic high-availability recommendations
What Azure Advisor misses
Stopped-but-allocated VMs
Advisor doesn't flag VMs that are stopped at the OS level but still allocated (and billing). This is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in Azure.
Stale snapshots and orphaned resources
Advisor doesn't check for old disk snapshots, orphaned NICs, or unused deployment slots. These accumulate silently over months.
Old-generation SKUs
Running Dv2 or Dv3 VMs when Dv5 is cheaper and faster? Advisor won't tell you. CostBeacon flags every VM on an older-gen SKU with the specific replacement series.
